Pretax amount

Add tax or extract it

US checkout tax is a combined rate: the state base plus local city, county, or district rates that apply at the destination. This page uses the combined percentage you type. It does not load a live 50-state schedule.

Sales tax = pretax amount × combined rate
Total with tax = pretax amount + sales tax
Pretax amount = tax-inclusive total ÷ (1 + combined rate)
Extracted tax = tax-inclusive total − pretax amount

Example

California’s statewide base is 7.25%. On a $100 pretax amount that rate is $7.25 of tax and a $107.25 total. Extracting tax from $107.25 at 7.25% returns the $100 pretax amount.

State base and local add-ons

Alaska, Delaware, Montana, New Hampshire, and Oregon have no statewide sales tax; some of those states still allow local sales taxes. City and county add-ons can raise the combined rate well above the state base. Use the rate printed on the receipt or published by the tax office for that address.
