Estimate how much you need invested today for compound growth alone to reach your financial independence target by retirement age.
What is Coast FIRE?
Coast FIRE is the point where your current invested assets could grow to your retirement target without additional contributions, assuming a fixed real return. You would still need income for current expenses before retirement.
FIRE target = annual retirement spending ÷ withdrawal rate Coast FIRE number = FIRE target ÷ (1 + real return)^years
How to read the result
If current assets equal or exceed the Coast FIRE number, the scenario is on track without further retirement contributions. Returns, inflation, taxes, fees, and spending can differ from the assumptions, so the result is a planning benchmark rather than a guarantee.
Frequently asked questions
Does Coast FIRE mean I can retire now?
No. It means the entered assets may grow to the future target by the selected age; current living expenses still need funding.
Why use a real return?
The spending target is stated in today’s dollars, so a return after inflation keeps the calculation in the same purchasing-power terms.
Are future contributions included?
No. Coast FIRE specifically tests whether the current invested balance can reach the target without new contributions.
